Chapter 14

: Alpha

After making the climb to Bravo module through service stairs, the android and clone following his lead, Jake used the silver security bracelet to bypass the lockdown and let them into the dim, broken halls of the partially repaired module. Without needing the wrist-buddy he had retraced the path first to collect the blue tribesmen.

Now at the end of the corridor and next to the main doors to Alpha module Jake paused to inspect the portal, imagining there had to be some trap to keep them out. Inset down a short corridor of the main hallway the blast doors were unlike the others he’d come across; these ones didn’t have the manual release latch and despite what looked like blast and burn marks had withstood all attacks and remained perfectly intact.

Whatever had got into the Alpha module to piss in Cool Breeze’s brain hadn’t got in through here.

“Locate the access panel,” Jake asked his wrist-buddy.

“I’m not sure there is one,” the device said cheerfully. “Welp, better just head back to Delta module and grab some chow, don’t you think?”

“What about this?” Milan asked, undogging an armored panel to reveal the black glass of the security pass scanner.

“Oh look, there it is!” the wrist-buddy happily pointed out.

Jake shared a look with Synthetica that told her what he thought of the mini-computer’s reliability.

“Whatever got into Cool Breeze has adjusted the wrist-buddies with contrary operational parameters,” Synthetica said.

“Ya think?” Milan snapped.

Jacob approached the glass-like panel that covered the security scanner and produced Whiteman’s silver multi-pass from under his armor vest. While Tesla and the other blue barbarians watched, he flashed it to the electric eye. For a moment the silver card reacted to the scan and produced a floating holographic data string before the panel lit up green and they heard a series of heavy thunks as bolts pulled back. The tribe made an awed sound of wonder and made a weird genuflection.

After he, Synthetica and Milan made their way to the Bravo module through stairwells and service ladders it had been easy to free the blue-skinned human tribe. There’d been a heartfelt reunion as all the girls greeted each other, and Jake felt a moment of strange pride at the loyal women who followed him. After a quick explanation the Seekers had simply shrugged and volunteered the quickest way to get to the main Alpha module entrance. Tesla and Venti had each spared a moment to kiss Jake and then they’d gathered what was left of their belongings and headed out into the dim, rusted corridors of the still under-construction Bravo module.

The grinding gear noise signalled the massive doors were moving, and they split horizontally, raising and lowering into recessed slots. Jacob waved the others back, knelt with as much cover as he could find against the wall with the acid revolver levelled, and scanned what lay past the doors.

Like Echo and Delta modules it was pristine white. Almost perfectly preserved after two centuries. Glowing surfaces for walls, floor and
