The kid with the knife asked, “Huh?”

“I had seen some ships that Miss Zoom had built, and I wanted to hire her for the fleet. She had heard about the fact that I was a bounty hunter, and thought I was just trying to catch her crew to turn them in. That was before I started carrying a stunner. I shot her in the behind, to get her to quit shooting at me long enough to listen to what I had to say.”

The kids looked at Zoom. She said, “That’s the way it happened.”

The kid with the knife asked, “You just walked up to her, and shot her?”

“No. We were trying to take her ship, and she didn’t go down when we stunned the rest of her crew. She came out of an airlock shooting at me. I got lucky, and hit her before she got me.”

Zoom said, “That’s the way I remember it.”

I said, “I know I don’t want to, but I think we better talk about Mr. Pondwater some more.”

The girl who had asked about Janet said, “Do we have to? He’s creepy.”

Zoom asked, “How do you mean, Hakkum? Did he touch you?”

“No, he didn’t, but it sure seemed like he wanted to.”

I asked, “Why do you say that?”

“He just gave me a bad feeling.”

“Understood. Does anyone else have anything to say about him?”

The knife kid said, “He had lots of guards with him. Human guards, not like your Marines.”

One of the younger kids spoke up. “They were mean. They hurt me, just because I was where that Pondwater man wanted to walk.”

Knife kid said, “You didn’t hear them warn you, because you weren’t paying attention.”

“I know, but they were still mean.”

Knife kid replied, “That’s for sure.”

I asked, “Why do you say that?”

“One of the little kids ran up to ask him if he was taking us somewhere nicer, and they sent her away crying.”

“I see. Did anybody hear these folks talking about what they wanted to do?”

One of the other boys spoke up. “He sure doesn’t like you. He thinks you tricked him, and he wants to punish you for it.”

I replied, “I followed their laws, the way they are written. It’s not my fault they left a loophole in there that let me get by without letting them mess around for years, refusing to even hear our case.”

One of the girls spoke up. “I heard him talking about that. He said they weren’t going to be able to change the law, and some reporter had told everyone about the trick you had used. He seemed to think bad things were going to happen because of it.”

I said, “Well, I’m pretty sure things are going to change. Whether they’re better or worse is still to be seen.”

Knife kid asked, “How do you mean, change?”

“Well, a lot of things haven’t changed much in the Commonwealth for a long time. I have to think that once people are out from under some of the Commonwealth laws, new things are going to happen.
