To be a successful legend, the crew has to work together. If we are too busy fighting each other, we won’t be able to fight the real pirates. Lives are at risk, and if we are going to squabble amongst ourselves, others may die. You need to be able to trust your fellow sailors.

Adi watched him go, his back stiff and straight. The Red Wind continued to rock back and forth, and Adi heard the ship call, very faintly, “Goodnight, Ravin.” But the ex-assassin walked on without a reply, without a pause in his stride. Did he not hear her? Or was he just ignoring her voice?

“Pity,” the ship said. “I was hoping to get a bit of music tonight. Do you sing, Adi?”

“No.” Adi left the railing. “I don’t.” And she left the deck, feeling a touch guilty that she was just leaving the ship alone. But then again, the Red Wind was a ship. Not a person. And she was still on the ship. Or going in the ship. Or whatever. This whole talking-ship-thing was just weird. “Goodnight, Red Wind.”

“Goodnight, princess.”

Adi climbed down the steps and pushed back the canvas door to the girl’s room. Ash sat in her hammock, her face looking better than it had been for a while now. Being docked probably helped, as the ship didn’t rock about as much as she did out when in the middle of the ocean.

“I’m torn between sleeping here for free and paying for a room at a nearby inn,” Ash said, the corner of her mouth quirking up in a sort of smile. “Seeing as how I have very little money on me, I have voted to stay here and work with the hammock situation. It could be worse, I suppose. I’m getting used to being on the ship.”

“Good,” Adi studied the hammock that had been assigned to her. The blankets and pillow did look comfortable, but once one got into a hammock, the best course of action was to not move, lest one get hopelessly twisted up. “Do we know what the plan for tomorrow is?”

From the far end of the room, where she crouched over a small book, reading by candlelight, Sandaline shook her head. “I don’t know. Heather and Jay are still out.”

“What are they doing?” Ash kicked her boots off and eased back down into the hammock, somehow making it look easy. “Are they, uh...married or something?”

“Yeah,” Sandaline shrugged. “They’ve been friends ever since they were little. Their parents were all killed by Captain Martin.”

“Ah. Shared life experiences,” Ash grunted. “That’ll really pull people together.”

Supposedly. Despite fleeing for their lives and having escaped a sea dragon, everyone on the Red Wind still seemed a bit touchy with each other. Maybe it took a while for the “bonding over shared experiences” thing to kick in. If they were attacked by the pirates, by any pirates, they would be in trouble. Jay’s crew didn’t trust Ravin, the selectees didn’t trust the crew, and she, honestly, didn’t trust Captain Jay Hill, when it got right down to it.
