Meeks is dribbling up top while Zay sets a hard screen to free up KO. It works—KO flashes to the wing with a good look at a corner three. Except KO’s defender recovers enough to block KO’s shot, or at least make KO think twice about releasing.

KO’s jumper is as quick as it is beautiful, and he releases the ball over the defender’s outstretched hand. The shot falls cleanly through the net.

With less than a minute left, we’re up two.

But the Wolves surprise us. All game, they’ve played slower than sleepy, but now they push the ball, running a double screen on the baseline that wipes out J-Wu, and zipping the ball around the perimeter—zzzp zzzp zzp—faster than we can rotate. Zay closes fast, but he’s a split second late, and the Wolves’ leading scorer, Trash-Talk Dre, nails a clutch three to reclaim the lead.

Zay taps his chest, like my bad, hangs his head as he jogs up the court.

“Keep your head up, Zay,” I yell in his direction. “We need you right here.”
