These are sobering facts for the pharmaceutical industry. But the problem of unclear instructions extends well beyond drug labels and touches on many areas of business, government, and daily life. Far too many companies and government agencies are having trouble communicating the basic information people need to use products and services.

Want to install a car seat? Should be fairly easy, right? Not according to a recent study showing that 80 percent of child safety seats are improperly installed or misused and the instructions for installing them are the root of the problem.5 For one thing, those instructions are written at a tenth-grade reading level, while at least 50 percent of U.S. adults read at a significantly lower level.

How about parking your car? How hard could that be? Well, if you’re in New York City, you must somehow decipher the street sign shown in Figure 5.1. The sign is laughable, but the hundreds of dollars in fines (and towing of your car) aren’t. Certainly technology should be able to correct this by allowing you to use a smartphone to scan a sign and get a message customized by date and time to tell you whether you can park worry-free at that moment.
