Lula

Jules’s words are like gasoline to the fire of my temper. I advance into his apartment, taking a menacing step forward.

The difference in size between us probably doesn’t make me very scary, but I’ve never been so mad in my entire life.

“Fuck you, Jules!” I snarl.

“Charming,” he says, his dark blue eyes blazing with barely repressed fury. “Is that the kind of language they taught you at that fancy prep school your mom sent you to?”

I clench my fists, fighting the urge to punch him to wipe that sardonic little smirk off his perfect face. “You don’t get to tell me who I can and can’t hang out with. Crew might not be my friend but neither are you.” I say, ignoring his dig at my choice of language.

His scowl darkens, his jaw set as we face off.

“I’ve been your friend your entire life, you’ve known Crew James for what? Five minutes?”

God, I’ve never wanted to hit someone so much like I want to hit Jules right now.

“Does it matter?” I laugh, but there’s no mirth in it. “At least he is interested in getting to know me, which is more than I can say about you and your brother. Since the second I arrived, Stefan acts as if I’d killed his cat or something. You haven’t even looked at me, it’s like you’ve never known me. Like I don’t exist.”

My accusation seems to hurt me more than it hurts Jules.

“Lula, you haven’t been here in three years. Life has changed since the last summer you were here. My life has changed.”

“Do you think you’re the only one who’s changed, Jules?” I throw back, fighting the tears that make my throat hurt.

His eyes search my face, traveling down my body in a way that makes it hard to breathe. “Oh, I can see that you’ve changed. The dark makeup, the piercings, that’s not you, Lula. It’s all a cry for attention.”

My skin tingles under the scrutiny of Jules’s blue eyes. “You don’t know shit about me, Jules. If this was a cry for attention,” I say, pointing at my face “I would have failed spectacularly. No one gives a shit about me. Not my parents, and definitely not you. There’s never been a place for me in your life; you were always too busy chasing every popular girl in town. I was never even a blip on your radar. In front of flashy girls like Jasmine, I completely disappeared.”

Satisfaction mixed with longing flood my heart when he lowers his gaze. I miss looking into Jules’s intense blue eyes, even if all there was in them was contempt and judgment. I don’t even care about how he looks at me as long as he does. Jules is like the sun and like everyone else who crosses paths with him, I’ve never been able to help but be attracted into his orbit.

“Is that what you think?”

He utters his question in a whisper, his voice so low that I doubt I even heard him correctly.
