Rastay watched them go, confusion roiling in his thoughts. What was all that about? Nothing he had said could have been taken amiss, but Oulin obviously had done so. He could never completely understand his friend at the best of times, and his attention to Dradin made no sense at all. It was an annoyance, only that, and Oulin gloried at annoying Rastay continually.

Yet there had been genuine irritation in Oulin’s words, no playacting at all.

He frowned, moving so that he stood in the sun and his breeches could dry more swiftly. He would go change them later, for now he wanted to stay on deck and keep an eye on Oulin and Dradin.

He side-eyed Pausi, having earlier seen his valet speaking with the boy as Rastay had been swimming in the water below. He counted on Pausi to explain emotional nuances that he had no hope of comprehending. “What’s got Oulin so worked up?”

His valet crossed his arms over his chest and gave him a level look that promised trouble. It was clear he believed Rastay had done something wrong, but for the life of him, he could not imagine what. Apart from bringing the boy on board and…

“The boy is damaged. Deeply. Oulin uses his charm to draw him out. Whatever you will make of him, Captain, Oulin wishes for him to leave with as little destruction as possible.”

Rastay turned to face him, outraged. “He is a Sharlain! Has Oulin cast that fact aside?”

“He is a Sharlain, that is true, but he is also a young man. A young man who, by all accounts, suffers more from that name than can be imagined. Be careful, my lord, or you will have guilt at your heels when you see the results of your actions. You are not a vicious man, but the boy does not know that. He only knows you are doing this to harm his brother. Don’t make him another case of hatred. We have enough of that in this world without adding to it deliberately.”

Rastay snarled, feeling anger surge upward, making his fists clench and his temper rise higher.

“Did it not make Ren a hater? Was what was done to him anything close to allowable? I would think that you’d see this more clearly than me. And yet, here you are defending a Sharlain? I never thought you would turn against me.” The pain of the words rose without thought. He had never trusted those around him when he had been growing up. Everyone always had ulterior motives when it came to him. To find out that Pausi…

“You will cease that nonsense right now.” Pausi’s tone was hard. “You know my loyalty, but I am also neutral enough to see how this could damage you in the future. When your revenge is played out, when you see the results, you will feel remorse, I know this.”

“I have felt nothing but remorse for years. What is a little more?” Rastay’s tone dripped bitterness as he turned on his heel and made for his cabin.
