The Azukitogi Yokai

A long time ago, there were Azukitogi yokai here and there, known for making a mysterious noise that sounds like beans being washed. You know that rice is washed clean in a kitchen sink, and you know the sound of it going shoki shoki. There are also people who hear the sound of beans being washed as the same sound.

Long ago, when night fell, one could often hear that sound coming from nowhere in particular, and children playing outside would stop what they were doing and go home. At such times, the grown-ups would say, “Look, it must be the Azukitogi here at this late hour,” and order the children to stay inside. But no one ever saw the Azukitogi. Nevertheless, walking over a dark bridge or taking a road that few people used, the frightening sound of shoki shoki could be heard from somewhere. And when children suddenly could not be found, it was said that they had been taken off by the Azukitogi. The Azukitogi was also heard to sing a scary song:
