During the second week of February, a snowstorm rampaged along the East Coast, burying New York City in what the newspapers would refer to as the “Megalopolitan Blizzard.” The city would stop—no work, no school, no cars or buses; the subways barely functioning—only a lone taxi sloshing and sliding adventurously along an avenue, its tires wrapped in chains, or else a cop car or fire engine once in a while attempting to save someone’s day.

Blizzards such as these allowed a communal reprieve from the hectic life in the city, its millions of citizens huddled into whatever shelters they had at their disposal. There were times, during the winter months, when I would jump onto the Metro-North Railroad to Connecticut so I could see my family, only for the entire train to stop, its electricity shut down, the steel wheels frozen to the rails, and I would sit there trapped in the dark of the car, shivering, with no means of communication, at times for hours.

But for all their inconvenience, the whiteouts of deep winter were gorgeous and romantic in their silence, gleaming and cold, the yellow lights of bodegas coloring the silver air, a few bodies traipsing clumsily through the embankments, sometimes running into each other, maybe recognizing a friend beneath the woolen caps and scarves and coat collars upturned about the neck, smiling at the wild reality of nature’s majesty.
