Outside the window, there was little to see beyond the heavy rains and the darkness cast by the thick clouds. The occasional burst of lightning gave light in the night, but it was a moment’s spark eventually swallowed by the endless darkness. Kira rubbed at her neck.

“You’re anxious.” Delilah commented from the seat across from Kira in the SUV they rode in.

“I’m—“ Kira began when she glanced at Delilah, who gave a knowing smile, “How’d you know?”

Delilah chuckled when she shut her book. “I know quite a few things about you, more now than ever before.”

The raven-haired woman frowned with guilt.

“I consider it a privilege. Your trust in me has grown to a point I never believed you would reach on your own, yet here we are.”

“I betrayed you…” Mumbled Kira as her eyes dropped to her lap, “On more than one occasion…”

Delilah set the book to the side. “You did what was necessary. To protect yourself, your friends, your family, I shall never fault you for that, but Kira you have a single flaw.” She reached across and lifted Kira’s head up by her chin. “Kira, you refuse to see how beautiful a soul you are. You place the needs of others above your own. You fight battles that would beat down even the most powerful immortal and fight demons that would drown those who have outlived you ten times over.”

The Countess cupped the side of Kira’s face as she continued.

“You wear one mask after the other willingly, where others would have lost their sense of self. You have not wavered. No, Kira Nightraven, you have not betrayed me. You have given me the ability to trust beyond logic, beyond reason, in someone who would protect me for nothing more than our shared friendship.” She leaned forward and kissed Kira on the forehead. “You are perfect, just as you are.” Her touch lingered. “Never again must you hide your true self from me. I will always accept you, no matter what.”

Kira was left speechless at the declaration and was embarrassed by it. When you say it like that … She leaned back while Delilah returned to her book. Kira glanced back at the immortal when adjusting the scarlet scarf. It sounded like a confession. The car came to a halt and Kira stepped out first. After an umbrella was opened, she stood in the rain while Delilah was kept dry, and they entered the castle. A servant took the umbrella and their coats, freeing them to walk down the great hall and join Derrick and Adam, who spoke to others of the family. Adam’s face brightened when he saw Kira, but his usual bubbly personality did not show. Kira felt she had missed a great deal in her absence.

“You should have been here sooner.” Derrick said as Delilah spoke to another relative, “She may bear the weight of your transgressions, but I will not stand for it.”

Kira watched the others. “Your anger is misplaced.” She said, “I was not the one who left her half-dead.
