Chapter 10

A couple of hours into their trip, after emails and texts were exchanged about the aftermath of the hotel incident, Ryann turned their convo from work to personal. “Tell me about the family. I mean we’ve already established your grandmother is awesome. Your mom seems sweet and obviously cares about you.” Unlike Ryann’s own mother who had more of a “take it or leave it” kind of attitude when it came to her daughter.

Drew sighed. “My gram is something all right. I have a feeling you two will hit it off. And yeah, my mom is great. So is my dad.”

“But?” Ryann asked, hearing regret or maybe reservation in Drew’s voice.

“No. Nothing really. My father and I were super close growing up; then, you know, daughters grow up and … things change.” Drew shrugged the rest of that thought off.

There was a story there, Ryann knew, but now wasn’t the time to push. “How about your brother?”

“Bo.” Drew chuckled. “Yeah, he’s, ummm, we’ll just say he’s a charmer. He’ll charm the pants right off you.”

Ryann leaned toward Drew and waited for Drew to glance over. “If my pants come off, I guarantee that he won’t be the Beckett to do it.” Ryann chuckled when Drew had to swerve back into their lane. “Ted again,” Ryann announced as her phone rang. “Hey, Ted, you have more news for us?”

“Just got out of a meeting with DPD. They aren’t happy, but with the Frazier thing, they’re cooperating. They’re going to give us a couple of days before they put their own IA on it. Still nothing on Frazier, got tracers on his phone and cards. Which will hopefully give us a lead. I’m thinking about bringing Sweetland in on him. You good with that?”

“Yeah. Sweetland’s good. I trust him,” Ryann agreed.

“Me too. But it will still be on a need to know.”

“Sounds good.

“You got accommodations?”

“Yeah, we got it covered for a couple of days, but we’ll plan on moving again on Saturday.”

Drew shot Ryann a curious look, who wiggled her eyebrows.

“Good. Oh wait, hold on. I think we just got the new intel from a convenience store down the road from the safe house.” He paused to read. “Looks like twenty minutes before your encounter there was a black truck occupied by two men who came in the store, grabbed some things, cigarettes, lighter and such. They match the clothing description you gave, and we got a nice shot of one of them. Let me shoot it to you.”

A second later, Ryann’s phone pinged, and she examined the attached picture before turning it to Drew.

“That’s Carlos Vega,” Drew offered.

“Torres’s second in command,” Ryann finished.

“Well, that makes quick work of that,” Ted replied. “Let me get that info over to Mack. We’re working on the video from the hotel. I’ll shoot it over when I have it. In the meantime, you two stay safe. Ryann, regular check-ins.”

“Will do.”

They spent the next hour of road time between their own reflections and talking through possibilities of how two different crime organizations could have found them.
