Chapter Ten–Red Sky

I guided Jarod out of Southland, a place where every whisper of the wind seemed laced with warnings, and every shadow felt pregnant with unspoken threats. The air was thick, almost tangible, as if the night itself tried to slow our steps, to whisper caution into our ears with each gust that rustled the leaves and danced across our skin.

“I didn’t do it. I really don’t remember doing anything. I would never…I mean, I have been heavy-handed with Susan before and I regret that, but I didn’t do this. I wouldn’t try to kill her! I don’t even remember coming here! You must believe me! Please!”

“You should turn yourself in, Jarod. Talk to the sheriff.” It wasn’t for me to believe him or not believe him. All I wanted to do was get him far away from Southland, from Aracely and Susan.

“But you know he’s not going to believe me. I was…I think I was possessed! I must have been, right?” Jarod’s desperation was clear but I had no advice to offer him.

Even as I drove Jarod to the safety of his home, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were being watched. It was unnerving to say the least. Again I suggested he allow me to take him to the sheriff’s station but he refused and I felt an urgency to return to Aracely.

I pulled into his driveway and he hopped out of the car without another word. I was glad for that. There was no convincing him to do the right thing and I had other things on my mind. As I parted ways with Jarod, the weight of my responsibility pressed down on me with renewed force.

I was drawn back to Aracely, compelled by a force stronger than duty.

Suddenly, I sensed danger. Real, malevolent danger.

Aracely. I’m coming back. Hold on!

As I moved silently through the night, the red sky above—a harbinger of the blood to be spilled and the trials to come—watched over me. It was a silent witness to the path I had chosen, a path that would lead me back to Aracely.

And so, with every mile that drew me closer to Aracely, I felt the threads of our destinies intertwining more tightly. Yes, we were weaving a complex tapestry of love, duty, and danger.

Southland, with all its eerie beauty and lurking shadows, stands as a testament to the challenges we faced, a reminder that the fight for survival is also a fight for the soul of this place, for the heart of the one I've come to love.

Yes, love. I loved Aracely Burkhalter. I prayed she felt the same. I was about to find out.

The twilight bled into the horizon as I approached the threshold of Southland, my boots sinking softly into the earth that whispered stories of its ancient Cherokee roots.

My heart was a steady drum, resonating with the land's rhythm, carrying the weight of my people's history in every beat. As I reached for the door, it swung open, and time seemed suspended, leaving me adrift in a moment that would forever alter the fabric of my being.
