Chapter 34

The following day Keegan wondered aimlessly. He bunked lectures. Took a bus into Sandton City where he sat on the steps at Mandela Square, watching the people and birds. Admiring the huge statue of Mandela standing before the entrance of the mall. He desperately tried to understand why a man would come into his life, love him, swear his undying devotion to him and then tear his life apart by being an asshole.

But the human spirit is more than pain, he thought. We pick ourselves up each day, focus on the positive and make the best of what we have. Then one day the person you love and trust above all others drops a bomb. And 'BAM!' Just like that, the monster u have been run-ning from your whole life wins.

He wondered if Conrad ever knew his name.

Sure he knew his name, but the power of that word Keegan, did he ever really know it?

Or was this about being the first loser all over again.

They had such power together. They could conquer the world when they were together. How did Conrad feel now? Did he even think about Keegan and how he had hurt him?

Keegan delivered to himself an unwavering promise that this would not deter him from getting to Rio. Rio was his destination, with or without Conrad. The sun still rose in the morning, still set at night. This was what he was afraid of right from the beginning; the hurt, the insecurity, loss of trust.

There would be no more love in his life.

And what if Conrad came to him and begged his forgiveness?

No. One chance. That's all Keegan gave, and Conrad blew that chance. But to love another means giving a second chance, he thought. No. Second chances were just the same as being the first loser.

No more men. It would just be himself and his life. Fuck them all.

His phone chirped. He didn't look at it. He wasn't in the mood to speak to anyone. No one was that special in his life. He might just as well have had no heart.

Keegan thought about Conrad every waking moment like a constant heartbeat and there was nothing he could do about rejection. But he had never told Conrad that he loved him because he was afraid Conrad would not feel the same and the friendship would end immediately.

He put his head in his hands and whimpered softly. Why him? Why the hurt? Had he deserved it? He had given his all to Conrad. He had given his heart. Well, no more giving. He'd take from now on. Fuck them and leave them. He whimpered so loudly that a child pointed and asked his mother, 'Why is that man crying, mom?'

The woman approached Keegan sitting on the steps. 'Are you okay? My child is worried about you.'

'Keegan looked up and his eyes were bloated and red, tears streaming down his cheeks. He shook his head.

The woman patted his shoulder, took her child's hand and walked away. The child ran back and placed his arms around Keegan.
