X Craft

Improved versions of the prototypes, the production boats had a different internal layout. The Vickers-built boats were ordered first. Maximum operational depth: 300ft (95m). Maximum towing speed behind a submarine was 10.5 knots, though up to 12 knots was reached when towing submerged. An S Class submarine towing an X Craft had its endurance reduced by 30 per cent: the comparable figure for a T Class boat was 5½ per cent. The first six boats were lost during the attack on Tirpitz.
