Chapter ten

The hike was, he had to figure, fine, really. Everyone going with them was more or less in shape for it. Even Gemma handled the walking well enough. They kept to a slow pace, stopping to look at the sights, which were nice enough. There was a small stream that they settled by, drinking the clean water that they had with them, enjoying the few degrees of coolness that having moisture in the area brought.

When they did that, Lou doing his job and staying by him, Laura moved over, smiling.

“Hey! I need to speak to Jake for a minute.” She seemed cheery and not like she was planning to kick his scrawny behind if Lou left him alone.

The older guy scowled anyway.

“I’m supposed to stick with him. It’s a leadership thing, so... You get me. I can’t just drop the idea. If I do that, then everyone will get lazy with it.” He looked around, actually seeing that Leslie and Bart both had their cams out. Ready to catch anything interesting.

Laura glanced the same way and actually nodded, after a moment, getting the idea.

So she winked. It was an old person move, made young by the woman, who was good looking enough to get a job in Hollywood, if she wanted it. Even if she was probably north of eighty. The truth was that she looked to be around twenty-seven or so. Fit and lean, too. Which meant that Lou wasn’t easily going to be scared off. Plus, he wasn’t totally certain that she and probably Jim, hadn’t beaten Jake into a concussion a few weeks before. That had been his grandmother, as it turned out. The step-one was a lot nicer than that. Not that she hadn’t hit him.

In practice.

Clearly thinking, she just waited for a bit. Then smiled.

“I know some people who work in the government. Jake and some of his friends asked if they could find June’s Aunt, Deborah Weise. She...”

Lou clenched his jaw.

“That fucking witch? She tried to sacrifice Junie when she was little. I mean, I’ve seen the scars, with my own eyes. They were cutting her up. Rape and stuff too but it... yeah. Someone agreed to get that bitch, finally?”

If Laura was shocked that Lou was that informed, it didn’t show on her face at all. Then, Jake hadn’t been aware of the depth of his knowledge, either.

“Wait... Did you two actually date? It sounded more like she just kind of, um, did some stuff with you a few times.”

Lou looked over at him. Then took a very deep breath.

“Off and on. She kept hooking up with other guys. I get it. I mean, she’s broken, inside. It shows in her trying to please everyone around her and that, well, her life hasn’t been all about baking and making food for people. Which, you know, way healthier way to make friends. I was kind of a prick back then too. There was stuff with my step-dad. Beatings. Torture, really. Then he died.” He smiled on the last words.
