Anya tossed and turned in bed, checking her phone every other minute and willing Bruce to return her many calls. He should’ve gotten home two hours ago! She’d envisioned them spending the evening together curled on their living room couch with a romantic movie. Instead, he was out god-knew-where.

Lately, things returned to a frustrating state. Bruce was always out late, with the excuse he organized the church’s annual fundraiser. She did not think much of it until she received a phone call from Crystal, the ‘church gossiper’, a few nights ago when Bruce was out.

“Why aren’t you attending our meetings?” She asked. The church was hosting a major fundraising event, with meetings held by a committee to plan the occasion.

“I don’t have the time, Crystal. I have my business to manage.”

“Well, you better juggle them both.” Crystal advised. “Your husband and Patricia are getting real tight—inseparable—and he takes her home every night.”

“What’s wrong with her car?” Anya asked, curious, for Patricia had purchased a brand-new ride.

“It’s fine, as far as I know. I think it’s just a ploy to have Bruce take her home. She wants to get close to him.”

Anya snorted. Will the bitch ever give up? She’d thought Patricia would have realized she fought a losing battle by now. It was clear she hadn’t.

“I’m not worried about Patricia’s motives,” Anya responded with confidence. I’m positive my husband has no interest in her.”

“You sure about that? Because Bruce seems more than interested.”

Anya’s stomach dropped. “What do you mean?”

“He’s not a part of the planning committee, but he’s always at the meetings. It’s not as if he contributes to the discussions either, he sits silently. When the meeting ends, he takes her home.”

“That’s not true. I wasn’t present for the committee selections, but he told me he was a part of the planning committee.”

“No, he’s not. The members of the committee are me, Patricia, Lisa, Jen, Mark…” as Crystal droned on, Anya’s mind whirled. If Bruce wasn’t on the committee why was he present at every meeting? A thought came to her mind and she asked Crystal.

“How long do these meetings last?”

“About forty-five minutes max.”

“Are you sure?” Bruce had told her the meetings last two hours at a minimum, as there were constant disagreements.

“Yes, we have a few discussions and then go home. Sometimes Patricia and Bruce hang back afterwards. It could mean nothing, but I thought you should know.”

Anya felt dazed. She bid Crystal goodnight and hung up. Pacing the room, she allowed her thoughts to wander. Was Bruce cheating with Patricia? If not, why would he lie about being on the committee?

Should she believe a word that Crystal just told her? It was common knowledge she tended to create mischief and stir up trouble; but what would have been her motive in this case?

She peered from the bedroom window to see if Bruce had arrived, but the driveway was still empty. Where the hell was Bruce, and why wasn’t he answering her calls?

She wanted to tear her hair out.
