19. Shove

Pain, bright lights, burnt spots in my vision, and a multitude of worried voices surrounded me. Some faces looked at me solemnly, some with fear, and some were looking at other people arguing. The actual words were indecipherable for the longest time, but something shifted in the back of my head and it all became clear.

"We need to cut it out before-"

"If you get anywhere near him with that knife, I’m-"

"Oh, you think you know better than me?"

"Yes!"

"Well, you don't, since I’ve had to do this a dozen times before, so how about you just-"

"Sorry, what’s happening?" I said, cutting into the shouting match between Jade and Anya. Both healers instantly forgot about the conversation, however, eyes locked onto me as I tried and failed to rise from the ground. That feeling of my skin separating from the asphalt, small bits still being embedded inside, made me wince.

The feeling of my vision getting darker was probably something else, though.

"Stop moving, Sloan, or the wounds are going to get even worse," Jade ordered with a firm voice, making me lie back down and ceasing all movement. Good that I did, since my blurred vision was almost enough to make me lose my lunch.

Or had I even had lunch? It was hard to remember.

"What’s the damage?" I asked, the new attempt at using my voice revealing just how sore and dry my throat was. I lifted an arm to try and touch it, but was swatted away by Anya instantly. "What?"

"The lower left side of your throat is entirely gone," she said, pulling out a knife from her side again. Jade looked ready to shout, but Ulrich came in and pulled her away. "I need to cut out the area where the magical necrosis still is. Nothing we have can stop it."

"Do that and he dies," Jade countered, pushing herself back at my side. "We can’t do that."

"You’ll live," Anya told me, ignoring her. "As long as you stay still, that is. I have an inch to work with without hitting something that’s lethal, and the margin of error without consequences is getting smaller by the second."

Thinking about what would happen if it wasn’t dealt with, I nodded to give consent. Taking a deep breath and holding it, she began the process. It stung heavily, and I almost wanted to shout in pain as the flesh was smoothly cut out from my throat, but I knew the results and kept to myself quiet. I’d experienced worse pain before. I could handle this.

The other times I had a near-lethal dose of adrenaline as well to ignore the pain with, you know.

I shut up that part of my brain immediately and was idle until I heard Anya breathe in relief. Getting Jade to help, they both whispered words as both light and water appeared around my upper body. In just a few seconds, I could feel that part of myself be restored, and I could breathe deeply again.

I hadn’t even realized how much I had been missing, that feeling of something pressing down on my throat removed.
