The offensive team includes the offensive linemen, backfield, and receivers. The linemen (centers, tackles, and guards) block on every play, trying to prevent the defense from tackling the ball carrier. The backfield consists of the quarterback, as well as running backs (a fast halfback and a blocking fullback) who stand behind him. Receivers are the speedy pass-catchers who stand along the line of scrimmage a few yards away from the linemen. A tight end is a blocker who also can catch passes.
