Chapter Sixteen

Ben's eyes were still closed, his breathing slowly returning to normal. Once he realized Chelsea was beside him, a primal urge took over. Without a word his mouth covered hers, his hands desperately pulling and holding her closer. Her clothes went flying as his boxers were roughly shoved away.

"I’m sorry,” he said, panting and rolling off of her. “I didn't mean to snap at you over Nate, and you don’t have to quit your job if you don’t want to. All I can think about is keeping you safe.” Ben kissed her sweaty hair. “Every minute, every day. That’s all I think about, and I guess seeing Veronica again just pushed me over the edge. But regardless, I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.”

“No,” Chelsea said, curling back against him. “I shouldn’t have snapped at you in the shower. You’re worried and trying to do whatever you can to make sure that I’m okay. That we are okay,” she said, moving his hand to her stomach.

Ben traced his favorite curve, lightly drumming and tapping until he elicited a small movement. “When you said you were done with me.”

“I know,” Chelsea interrupted. “I didn’t mean it. Not like that. Never like that. I’m sorry.”

Ben sighed. “Sometimes I wish we could drop everything and run away. Move to a new city, a new state. Somewhere no one knows us, and Veronica can’t fucking follow.”

“Mmm.” Chelsea's lips curled against him. “I’ve actually been thinking about selling this place. You can’t work from home forever, and that commute is going to feel a whole lot longer once the baby is here.”

“But you love this house. It was your mother’s. It’s where you grew up.”

Chelsea shrugged. “We could also rent it out. I just want us to be happy and yes, these walls hold a lot of good memories, but there were some not so good ones too.”

Ben never considered the possibility, not really. He had daydreams of whisking her away and starting a new life all the time but not once did he ever stop to consider that she would be on board. “Well we don’t have to figure it all out today,” Ben said. “But it’s nice to know you're open to the idea. Especially if this shit with Veronica takes another turn.”

Chelsea groaned. “Can we make a vow not to mention her, at least for twenty-four hours?”

“Absolutely,” Ben said. “I’ll even do you one better. Why don’t we get out of here for a while? We still need to pick out paint for the nursery. We could go to the hardware store, maybe stop by a couple furniture shops. See if anything catches your eye.”

“You want to paint it pink,” Chelsea said. “Don’t you?”

Ben laughed. “Is something wrong with that?”

“Just because she’s a girl doesn’t mean that she’s going to love Barbies and princesses.”

Ben laughed again. “I’m sorry. Have you met her mother?”

The baby kicked in agreement, or perhaps it was a dispute.

“What’s that, peanut?” Ben asked, his palm covering her stomach.
