Chapter Twelve

“What happened?” Doctor bitch asked absently.

Cara blinked at her. “I don’t know. I wasn’t there and Niles didn’t say.”

“Beast attack,” Kaen grunted out in a pained breath. “In tree when I saw. Ready to pounce on Niles, but attacked me instead when I tried to spear it.”

The woman nodded and glanced at Cara. “I’m Doctor Small, by the way, Jane Small—I don’t really care to be called skinny blond bitch. So if you could just refer to me as Doctor or Jane, that would be great.”

Cara felt her face redden, but it wasn’t entirely from discomfort. The bitch had a serious superiority complex! If she wasn’t always talking down to people …. Instead of pointing out that she’d earned the name, Cara just nodded.

“This ought to be sterilized, but I know we don’t have a fucking thing. At the very least we need to clean it with the cleanest things we have.”

“We cleaned the cook pot and put water in to boil before we left,” Cara said. “It should have had enough time to be sterile by now.”

“Good! Now if you could just get it to me here in something that won’t contaminate it ….”

Cara resisted the urge to glare. She might not be a doctor, but she damned sure wasn’t ignorant! She knew what to do to clean things even if she never got much chance at that now. “I could put the ladle in the boiling water for a few minutes. It holds a pretty good bit of liquid.”

Doctor bitch threw her gown at her when she started to leave. “Clean and sterilize that, too, and tear it into strips for bandages. It should be sutured but I don’t have anything to do that with. We’ll just have to close it the best we can with bandages.”

Cara nodded jerkily and left, rushing to the beach to check the water. To her relief, she saw it was boiling. The fire had burned down since they’d left and she had no real idea of how long the water had been boiling, but it was what they had. After shoving more wood under the pot, she went down to the beach to clean the blood out of the gown and then tore it into strips—which didn’t take nearly as much effort as she’d thought it would because the thing had been worn non-stop since they’d arrived and it was already wearing out from so much exposure to sun and salt water.

She’d already tossed the pieces into the pot and begun to stir them when Peggy and Debi arrived and offered to help.

Her brain was just so much mush from the shock of the accident/attack, and her anxiety about Kaen, so it took her a few moments to figure out the logistics. She shook her head. “Anything the cloth is exposed to will just re-contaminate it. I’ll have to carry water up to clean the wound and then come back for the bandages.

“You two can stand here and guard the pot, though, and make sure no one messes with anything.
