Construction of the new Madeline began in 1985 and ended in 1990. Volunteers from the Maritime Heritage Alliance donated 40,000 work hours to the project, and the ship soon began serving as an educational museum. Maintenance care for Madeline and ongoing operations are financed by donations. Much of this support comes from local individuals and groups interested in preserving maritime history in the Great Lakes region.
