[Indistinct]

They met just once, Lara and Karolina, up in Scotland. October, I’m pretty sure. Might have been September. And it was a real meeting. I mean, they didn’t just happen to be there at the same time. Curtis must have wanted them to meet. Another experiment. The Curtis book wasn’t yet dead in the water, so maybe the idea was that Lara could fill out the picture by talking to Karolina. I mean, Karolina was never going to dish the dirt on him, was she? Not saying there was any dirt to dish. Might have been. Skeletons in every closet, I suppose. The conversation was all about Curtis the collector, according to Asil. That’s what Lara told him. But the two women didn’t really click. Not chalk and cheese exactly, but they could have lived next door to each other for a year and never have become friends. You know what I mean? Different ways of taking the world. There was no way Karolina was ever going to confide in Lara, and Curtis would have known that. Which made some of us think he was just playing a kind of game. Put them together and see what happens. Not sure what could possibly have happened, mind you. It wasn’t like chucking a cat into a kennel. Perhaps he just thought they might enjoy talking to each other. He liked them both. Rosa might tell you that Lara was starting to get on his nerves a bit, but I don’t think that’s true. Not at that point. Anyway, Lara got the sense that Karolina was checking her out. Assessing where she was coming from. The boys would have asked themselves the same question, I’m sure. Carl especially. With any of the women, he was thinking: ‘Is this one in it for the money?’ I don’t think they ever suspected Karolina, but she was a special case. She was a self-sufficient unit. With Carl especially, the inheritance was always at the front of his mind, and you’re bound to have a few doubts about a person’s intentions, when there’s all that money involved. Tough on the woman as well, to know that the family is wondering what you’re up to. But most of them, like I said, weren’t in it for the long term. It was obvious. I think one of the reasons he kept on with Lara was that she wasn’t interested in him in that way. She was interested in him as a subject. The money was central to the story, but it didn’t make her eyes light up. Some people admire the rich because they’re rich. Lara wasn’t one of them.
