An hour later, I’m foraging through my Sub-Zero in search of satisfying junk food when the phone rings again. Cradling a box of Wheat Thins and a plastic container of guacamole that’s turned a suspicious shade of taupe, I pick up the phone. Brick.

“Yo. Spoke to Jack and Danny and ran into Ben at the market. We’ve got to do something.”

“I spoke to Phil.”

“What did he say?”

“He spoke to Gabe and Stewart.”

“And?”

“Word is she’s not coming back.”

“That’s the smart money?”

“Yep. We’re going to sit tight and see what happens next week.”

“That’s the plan?”

“Unless you got a better one.”

“No. I like it. It’s a good plan. The old wait-and-see. Let’s go with it.”

“Some problems fix themselves,” I say.

“Most of ’em, usually,” Brick says.
