CHAPTER 43

AFTER THE CONVERSATION with Cain and her uncle, they had all taken off to their rooms. Laney was sharing with Maldonado until some of the other rooms were made ready for guests. She slipped quietly into the room and had just climbed into bed when Cleo joined her.

The revelations from her uncle and Cain rolled around her mind. But with the warmth of Cleo’s body next to her and the lack of sleep, she soon drifted into a dreamless sleep.

The next morning, everyone slept late. And the sleep helped. It had pushed her mind back from the edge of panic, allowing her to look at things a little more objectively. And the decision she’d come to last night was the right one. She needed to put the pieces of the Arma Christi together so she could take out Samael. She was not going to let him harm Nyssa. And taking him out was the only way to guarantee that.

She was under no illusions that it was going to be easy. But she felt better at having an objective. Now she just needed to figure out how to make it happen.

By the time she made it downstairs, breakfast was in full swing. She languished over her meal as the kids roused the others, demanding a tour. Laney begged off, promising to catch up with them when she was done. She let herself relax and catch up with the news before she went to track the others down.

With the size of the house, that proved easier said than done. Laney wandered down the hallway on the third floor and found herself yet again in front of the picture of Cain from nearly 400 years ago. He looked regal, with his shoulders back as he gazed forward, but there was a coldness in his face. He had changed so much in just these last couple of years. It was amazing what a sense of belonging could do to a person.

Tori and Witt ran down the hall laughing, and Tori reached out and touched Delaney’s hip first. “I won.”

Witt crossed his arms over his chest. “Not fair. You have longer legs. It’s easier for you to go up the stairs.”

Tori danced around Laney. “Too bad. I still won.”

Witt looked like he wanted to kick his sister.

Laney reached out and grabbed him before he gave in to the impulse. She wrapped her arms around him from behind and leaned her head down toward him. “Don’t worry, Witt. You’re shorter than her now, but I have no doubt that in a few short years, you will be just as tall if not taller than her. Then you’ll really give her a run for her money.”

Tori placed her hands on her hips. “Yeah, but until then, I’m going to win.”

“Tori,” Laney said, her voice giving off a warning.

Tori rolled her eyes. “Okay. Witt, you’ll probably at least tie me in a couple of years.”

The grudging statement brought a smile to Laney’s lips. “Now, what are you two doing up here? And where is everybody?”

“The adults wanted to take a break.
