Consider an unhealthy habit, or a behavior that you would like to change to improve your lifestyle. It could be not exercising enough, eating poorly, smoking cigarettes, or drinking too much caffeine. What are your triggers? Consider all the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may lead to this problem behavior. Next, consider what alternative thoughts or behaviors might serve as coping skills to help you “break your chain,” or lead you away from your problem behavior so that you engage in healthier behaviors. It may be helpful to have a friend or doctor help you brainstorm coping skills. Take a look at the following example and then try to do your own chain analysis for one or two problem behaviors.

EXAMPLE OF A CHAIN ANALYSIS
