In New Zealand, this did not happen because the Māori were willing to quickly adapt without forcible prompting. Goods and foodstuffs were produced for sale, and a cash economy developed among the Māori almost immediately. That said, the majority of the Māori remained on the lower rungs of the trade hierarchy and were only ever approached to sell goods in their hands, or in the settlements. For the most part, timber, fish, whales, fur seals, and other wildlife resources were simply taken without regard to their ownership or traditional usage.
