Colled

The first time you enter the inner grove of fire, simply remain seated on the cubical seat of stone in the southern quarter, imagining the altar, the clearing around it, the circle of trees and the desert landscape stretching in all directions around it. Imagine it as clearly as you can: feel the sun’s heat blazing down from above; smell the resinous scent of the trees and the dry, dusty smell of the desert air; hear the soft hissing of sand as the wind blows it from dune to dune. When you are ready, close the practice as you would close any other meditation: perform the License to Depart, then close the temple in the Bardic Grade in the usual way.

The second and subsequent times you enter the inner grove of fire, you may remain seated on the cubical seat of stone or you may rise and move around the inner grove. Go to the altar and then walk about the circle or, if you wish, pass through the ring of trees and walk a short distance out into the desert. Notice if anything appears to have been left for you to find on the ground around the altar; sometimes signs from the inner realms of being may take this form, and if this happens, what you find should be explored thoroughly in meditation. Every detail of your movements and perceptions should be imagined as clearly as possible.

Finally, when you are ready to do so, imagine yourself during one or more of these workings performing the Summoning Ritual of the Fire Pentagram inside the inner grove of fire. Do this exactly as you would if you were performing the same ritual in your temple in the physical world; imagine every gesture and word just as though you were doing them with your physical body. As before, do not perform the Banishing Ritual in any inner grove.

The Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Paths

Once you have practiced the work given above often enough that you can open a temple in the Bardic Grade, perform the Calling of Fire, enter into the inner grove of fire, perform a Summoning Ritual of the Fire Pentagram there, then leave the inner grove, perform the License to Depart, and close the temple—all from memory and with good effect—you may begin the next stage of the work. This involves connecting the inner grove you have just reached with the three you have already formulated and traveling along the connections between them by means of the art of pathworking.

The method you will use for these three paths is identical to those you have already used. The fourth path runs from earth to fire and begins at the middlemost of the three ghostly portals on the southern side of the inner grove of earth. That portal is veiled with a red cloth that bears the geomantic character of Pobl, as shown below, in silver embroidery. You will call your guide by the name of cernunnos and all the powers of earth, and test any being that appears by the name of cernunnos.
