White to play

Q+N vs Q is generally drawn and this position, from Bogdanovich – Gubaidullin, Moscow 2020, should indeed be a draw, but Black is slightly handicapped by his offside queen and the position of his pawn, which blocks some possible checks. The game continued 1 Kf7 (a good try, unpinning the knight and threatening two different mates in one; without the pawn, Black would have an easy draw by ...Qa2+, but as it is he needs to be more accurate) 1...Kg5 (the only other drawing move is 1...Qa7+ and after 2 Ke6 Qb6 White is again restricted by the pin on his knight) 2 Qg6+ Kh4? (2...Kf4! is correct, and after 3 Qf5+ Kg3 4 Ne4+ Kg2 5 Qf2+ Kh3 the queen covers the mate on g3 and White cannot make anything of his attack) 3 Nf5+ Kh3 4 Qh5+? (4 Qh6+! Kg2 5 Ne3+ is correct, when White wins the queen after 5...Kf3 6 Qh3+ Ke4 7 Qf5+ or 5...Kg3 6 Qg5+ Kf3 7 Qg4+ Kf2 8 Qg2+ Ke1 9 Nc2+; in this line White used the typical motif of a knight which cannot be taken due to a skewer) 4...Kg2 5 Qe2+ (White’s attack is weakened when the knight is less aggressively placed) 5...Kg1 6 Qg4+ Kf2 7 Qh4+ Ke2? (Black should not allow White to improve his knight position with gain of tempo; playing the king to g2, f1 or g1 would draw) 8 Nd4+! Kf1 (after 8...Kd1 9 Qh1+ Kd2 10 Qg2+ Kc3 11 Nb5+ White wins the queen) 9 Qh1+ Kf2 10 Qh2+ Kf1 11 Qe2+ 1-0 as White wins the queen in any case.
