Progressive views on writing systems

Zhu ˉ Wénxióng and Liú Mèngyáng shared progressive views about the nature of writing systems. Zhu ˉ believed that, compared with creating a script new to the world, it is better to simply adopt an alphabet already widely in use.33 Liú took it a step further and argued that written characters were nothing more than symbols. Choosing what writing systems to use was thus primarily a matter of suitability and usability, and there should not be such distinctions between “our scripts” vs. “their scripts.”34
