1 Livy 5.49-50. See 5.24.7-9 for the similar earlier demand.

2 Mommsen suspected that the story of Manlius having saved the Capitoline Hill from attack by the Gauls was a folk etymology, and thought that his cognomen Capitolinus more likely reflected where his prestigious home was located. See Hooper 1979:53-55.

3 Forsythe 2005:259-260 grants that: “As in the cases of Spurius Cassius and Spurius Maelius, the sedition of M. Manlius is overlaid with late annalistic inventions, which make it difficult to ascertain what actually happened.” He finds that Manlius’s speech to his supporters “contains obvious fictitious elements derived from the political violence and rhetoric of the late Republic, especially from the Catilinarian conspiracy of 63.” Citing Livy 6.11-20 and Diodorus 15.35.3, he notes (p. 314) that the speech recalls the story by Livy 2.23 about the plight of an indebted centurion inciting the First Secession of the Plebs (above, Chapter 10). The story about Manlius’s house being leveled “was probably used to explain the open area in front of the temple of Juno Moneta on the Arx (Livy 7.28.5). The site was kept unobstructed by any kind of building not because of Manlius’s fate, however, but because the site was the augurs’ Auguraculum, from which they were accustomed to take the auspices.”
