Reincarnation Dreams

In western society, reincarnation — the belief that the soul has lived before through various incarnations — is not taken as seriously as in the east. Yet, according to Lisa Miller, author of an article entitled, “Remembrances of Lives Past,” that appeared in The New York Times in August 2010, many people in our society believe that reincarnation is at least a possibility. In fact, Brian Weiss, an American psychiatrist, has written extensively on reincarnation, based on his experiences in having his patients regress about past lives via hypnosis. His books, including his popular Many Lives, Many Masters, are best sellers, and he is a popular public speaker. His public speaking events are well attended across the U.S. Even the term, “soul mates” has become part of Western lingo. But regardless of whether or not you consider reincarnation a possibility, if you dream of what appears to be another time or another life, the importance of the dream is not so much whether reincarnation is real, but rather what lessons can be taken from the dream.

In fact, reincarnation dreams, real or not, symbolize unfinished business in the here and now, and that is the main point. Although reincarnation dreams can be quite intense for those who experience them because the events of the dream that depict an earlier time can seem real, both on an emotional and physical level, it is more important to try to determine what the symbolisms in the dream mean, rather than whether or not you actually lived in another time and place. If you do not believe in reincarnation, then perhaps your dream is trying to tell you that you are not learning some valuable lessons in this life and will be doomed to repeat your mistakes if you do not heed the messages. On the other hand, if you do believe in reincarnation, then dreaming of possible past lives could occur because you have not learned the lessons of a previous life and may be making the same mistakes in this one.

So why do some people experience reincarnation dreams and others do not? One theory is that you are not ready to understand a past life until you are a fully integrated person in this one. To be confronted by the emotions and memories of a life lived before could be traumatic for some, especially if you have unresolved feelings and experiences in this one. Therefore, you might not be strong enough to deal with the past if you are not yet strong enough to deal with the present.

Reincarnation dreams are usually grand in scale — one of those dreams that you cannot shake or forget and that leaves you feeling in awe at the experience. Of course, there is no way to prove a dream is about a past life. Often it comes down to a gut feeling on the part of the dreamer and a sense of familiarity about the location or the time and people in the dream.
