Chapter Seven

GRACE DIDN’T TELL Avril that she and Mosley had an early morning meeting with Ellender. The next day, however, she regretted passing up any advice on dealing with her agitated client, who started off by saying, “I’m ready to end this silly begathon.”

Grace was glad that this meeting was in their office. It was hard to keep up with Ellender without being caffeinated. She took a sip of French Roast and willed Mosley to keep quiet and not interrupt, and for once he seemed to read her mind.

“You’re right about me acting rashly in trying to get the foundation off the ground,” Ellender continued. “And I should have told you that I’ve been getting calls from a man demanding money, but I don’t get the feeling he’s dangerous. I just need to find out what he wants, but he’s too upset to make much sense when he calls.”

And with that, their fragile alliance crumbled.

“I’ll call Mac,” Mosley said. “The police should be the ones handling this.”

“No,” Ellender said firmly, and without her customary, “sir.”

Grace wanted to agree with her partner, but Ellender continued to talk in a tone that didn’t invite a discussion.

“Between us, we should be able to figure out who left that note. And when he calls next time, I’ll make him talk to me. No more hang-ups. This man is in trouble, I’m sure of it. And I’ve been thinking that while I’m not the one who owes him money, I might have the money he’s owed.”

“Through one of the Wilkenses or your father?” Mosley asked.

“My father paid his debts,” Ellender said. “It’s the other two I want you to check for me. If either of the Wilkens estates have claims that weren’t paid for some reason, look at those first. I may have inherited money that should have gone to someone else.”

Mosley looked appalled even as Grace was agreeing to the task.

“Those wills are public documents now,” Ellender said. “I’m not asking for any privileged information, but just make a list of how many claims there were and I’ll pay all of them.”

“I’ll go through both estates, but as I recall, there was nothing of note. I can’t promise to disclose what I find,” Mosley said, “but I will look.”

Ellender nodded. “Please do it as quickly as possible.”

“As you wish.” Mosley said with a slight nod. “If I may ask, m’dear, what, exactly, do your foundation’s assets consist of? At this time, I mean.”

Grace had to admire the way he could turn a phrase. She would have asked how much money Ellender had already given away.

“The assets are everything I received through the estates of Owen and Natalie Wilkens, and half of the inheritance I received from my father.”

“The other half being Verity’s.” He said, nodding. “You’re giving away everything that came to you from their deaths.”

“It’s not a selfless act, I assure you. It’s the right thing to do, and it’s the only way I can live with myself. I’ve set a tight budget
