Chapter Seven
GRACE DIDNâT TELL Avril that she and Mosley had an early morning meeting with Ellender. The next day, however, she regretted passing up any advice on dealing with her agitated client, who started off by saying, âIâm ready to end this silly begathon.â
Grace was glad that this meeting was in their office. It was hard to keep up with Ellender without being caffeinated. She took a sip of French Roast and willed Mosley to keep quiet and not interrupt, and for once he seemed to read her mind.
âYouâre right about me acting rashly in trying to get the foundation off the ground,â Ellender continued. âAnd I should have told you that Iâve been getting calls from a man demanding money, but I donât get the feeling heâs dangerous. I just need to find out what he wants, but heâs too upset to make much sense when he calls.â
And with that, their fragile alliance crumbled.
âIâll call Mac,â Mosley said. âThe police should be the ones handling this.â
âNo,â Ellender said firmly, and without her customary, âsir.â
Grace wanted to agree with her partner, but Ellender continued to talk in a tone that didnât invite a discussion.
âBetween us, we should be able to figure out who left that note. And when he calls next time, Iâll make him talk to me. No more hang-ups. This man is in trouble, Iâm sure of it. And Iâve been thinking that while Iâm not the one who owes him money, I might have the money heâs owed.â
âThrough one of the Wilkenses or your father?â Mosley asked.
âMy father paid his debts,â Ellender said. âItâs the other two I want you to check for me. If either of the Wilkens estates have claims that werenât paid for some reason, look at those first. I may have inherited money that should have gone to someone else.â
Mosley looked appalled even as Grace was agreeing to the task.
âThose wills are public documents now,â Ellender said. âIâm not asking for any privileged information, but just make a list of how many claims there were and Iâll pay all of them.â
âIâll go through both estates, but as I recall, there was nothing of note. I canât promise to disclose what I find,â Mosley said, âbut I will look.â
Ellender nodded. âPlease do it as quickly as possible.â
âAs you wish.â Mosley said with a slight nod. âIf I may ask, mâdear, what, exactly, do your foundationâs assets consist of? At this time, I mean.â
Grace had to admire the way he could turn a phrase. She would have asked how much money Ellender had already given away.
âThe assets are everything I received through the estates of Owen and Natalie Wilkens, and half of the inheritance I received from my father.â
âThe other half being Verityâs.â He said, nodding. âYouâre giving away everything that came to you from their deaths.â
âItâs not a selfless act, I assure you. Itâs the right thing to do, and itâs the only way I can live with myself. Iâve set a tight budget
