On March 19, 2012, the family of Natasha Montgomery held a smudging ceremony, a traditional First Nation’s way of coping with loss and seeking peace. The ceremony took place at the presumed location of Natasha’s murder: the apartment that had been rented by Legebokoff at the time of her death. Natasha’s family released a statement through the RCMP.

“Today we came here to pray and smudge the apartment where we lost our beloved Natasha. It is hard enough to accept the fact she is gone, let alone not having the ability to lay her to rest. We need her back to help in our family’s healing process . . . We wake up every morning wondering if today is the day she is found.”

A few months before Legebokoff’s trial was scheduled to begin, “Morgan B,” a friend of Loren Leslie’s from Kamloops, posted a message to her in the guestbook area of her online obituary being maintained by the Prince George Citizen newspaper.

Loren, it’s so strange to think that you aren’t here. Years later it is still hard to believe that something like this could have happened to you. Every now and then I remember silly little things like when our 1st grade substitute teacher told you take off your sunglasses when we came in after recess. She didn’t know that you had fancy lenses that changed in sunlight, until the whole class started yelling that she was wrong. I remember the day you and me stayed in at lunch and ripped up our erasers into tiny bits, which we got in trouble for later on. My favorite memory is probably when I went over to your house and the whole time I was there your little sister kept taking my stuffed bear and hiding it. We spent the entire time hunting for it again and again. We never did find it that last time did we?
