I’ll never forget Elsie’s face when Dad opened the door to the new flat for the first time.

It didn’t fall, it collapsed. And I wasn’t surprised. It was tiny in there. Our old place by the railway tracks was small, but it was cosy. The walls there were painted in warm colours, and there were curtains on the windows so we could keep the outside world away if we wanted to.

But here? Well, the walls were a dirty cream, all marked with nails and bits of broken shelves. And there were whiteboards dotted around the place too, covered in old messages about jobs that needed doing.

“I thought we could paint our own pictures on there,” Dad said, trying to be cheerful. “Or maybe we could draw a World Cup wall chart and record all the results on it. It’ll be fun!”
