Chapter Twelve

Ayda steeled her expression and walked out of the bathroom. Hùisdean didn't acknowledge her as she entered the kitchen. He kept his back to her as he moved around the small space, pulling some dry goods out of the cabinets. A cast iron pot was already heating up over a small flame.

“You can cook?” Ayda asked calmly, attempting to find some common ground with him.

“Mmph,” Hùisdean grunted affirmatively, refusing to speak more than he had to.

Ayda sighed, turning around to look at the interiors of the hunting lodge. The fire roared in the hearth, warming the entire room and casting harsh shadows along the walls. Under the flickering light, all the carvings and paintings took on a slightly frightening appearance.

Ayda's pulse raced. The tension in the air was so thick that she thought she couldn’t breathe. She turned around, letting out a frustrated exhale when Hùisdean's back still faced her.

“Are we going to keep doing this? Honestly! I cannot believe you want me to work with you, but you refuse to talk to me! What the fuck, Hùisdean?”

Hùisdean moved so fast that Ayda didn't even see him flinch. One moment, he was looming over a pot on the stove, and the next, she was pressed against the stone wall. Hùisdean's body was flush against hers as he slapped his hands on either side of her head. His eyes were wide, and the look on his face was positively feral as he checked her out, practically snarling as he leaned in until there was virtually no space between them.

“What the fuck?” Hùisdean quoted back to her. “I’ve told you that I'll start talking as soon as you want to tell me why you were prepared to die to protect me last night.”

All thoughts emptied from Ayda's brain. The only thing she could feel was Hùisdean's broad body pressed against hers, the heat searing through her clothing. Ayda was entirely unprepared for the wave of arousal that crashed into her body. Her thighs clenched together as she was suddenly hyperaware of the pulsing ache between her legs.

“I don’t…” Ayda gasped, struggling to turn her head to avoid Hùisdean’s eyes. “I said I didn't want to talk about it.”

Hùisdean growled again—a feral, untamed sound that made him appear more like a beast than a man. Ayda's body shivered all over. Instinctually, she found herself baring her neck towards Hùisdean while refusing to look at him head-on. He made a briefly satisfied sound and then slammed the brick beside her head.

“You don't want to talk about it?” Hùisdean punctuated his words with a hard thrust of his hips. Ayda's hands were pinned at her sides, and she failed to keep her strangled gasps contained. Hùisdean's face contorted into a satisfied smirk. “You're just as affected by us as I am, Ayda. You don't want to admit it, but I will.” He ground his hips against hers again, practically dry-humping Ayda against the wall. He was hard and thick against her, and the implications of how good he would feel inside of her were going to ruin Ayda.
