Secret Lives

Observers are usually happy to conform to the roles and expectations that people have for them. A job, a family, a certain standing in the community. An appearance of conformity may be the simplest way to get along, but Fives can also cherish the idea of going off and doing things that no one in their wildest imagination would consider. Observers sometimes compartmentalize their lives into several different sectors that don’t overlap. They may have unlikely combinations of interests and different sets of friends who haven’t been introduced to one another. Compartmentalization is one way to maintain privacy: you have a piece of yourself invested in every sector, but nobody gets it all.

Fives have elaborate ways to preserve their privacy. They can withhold their feelings, censor information, separate thinking from emotion, develop confidential bonding in relationships, and lead secret lives. There is hardly ever anything illicit about the secret, but it can produce profound feelings of freedom. Secrecy is a treasure because it ensures personal autonomy. You can go off by yourself at unpredictable times. A perfect escape into privacy.
