Monday night Espen and I wandered into town for dinner, then bolted into Fisken to avoid the rain that had started hammering the village. I shivered as we both pulled off our jackets and hung them on the old-fashioned coat rack by the door, water dripping onto the wood floor beneath them. Rubbing my arms, I took in my surroundings, noticing how crowded it was as Espen waved to a woman at a table across the restaurant. A waiter spotted us and motioned us forward, and I followed Espen toward his friend. We wandered over to the table, its inhabitant giving me a welcoming smile as I took a seat.

"This is Ylva," Espen said, motioning toward the woman as he sat down in one of the vacant chairs. My head tilted to the side as I studied her, noticing her dirty blonde hair that fell below her shoulders and sharp features. She was slim in stature and wore a wool sweater with Nordic patterns across the chest. "A good friend of mine," he added with a knowing look, which led me to believe she was a Forest Fae like him, "and my second in command."

I nodded to her. "It's nice to meet you."

"Espen has told me about you," Ylva said with a tip of her beer glass.

Part of me was surprised Espen had mentioned me, but I had been working with him lately, so it wasn't shocking. "Has he now?"

"Mm-hmm," she murmured, her eyes glittering with mischief.

"Only nice things," Espen said, leaning toward me. "I promise."

Considering my usual behavior, and the fact that I'd punched him—a knee-jerk self-defense reaction—when we'd first met, I highly doubted his sentiments had been solely good. I glanced back at Ylva and saw her barely contained grin. Yeah, she most definitely knew about the first time I'd met Espen.

"Anything to report this evening?" Espen asked, looking at Ylva, whose amused gaze broke away from mine.

She let out a long exhale and surveyed the room. Seemingly satisfied with whatever she saw, she said, "There was an issue with wolves north of the Langholm farm."

Espen stilled, his jaw tightening.

"Myself and a few others sent them away without any harm to livestock or farmland—"

"But?" Espen interjected.

"—but, the locals are now a bit spooked.” She narrowed her eyes at him. “I'm surprised you weren't notified at the station."

"If they did call it in, I wasn't informed." Espen wiped his palm across his jaw before settling back in his seat.

"Care to explain why these big bad puppies are a problem?" I asked, looking between the two of them before turning to Espen.

He sighed and clasped his hands together, resting his wrists on the table edge. "They're only a problem if they start picking off the sheep or any other animals, which always causes a ruckus with the locals," he said, that last word sounding more like a codeword for humans.

"Can't you just monitor the fields or have them moved to a safer location, like a sanctuary?" I asked, waving my hand toward the windows.
