CHAPTER SIXTEEN

THE FOLLOWING WEEK, Meghan stood next to the bifold door that separated her classroom from the music room in the elementary school. She listened to Walker’s deep voice leading students in a soulful rendition of “If I Had a Hammer.”

She peeked in, and it came as no surprise that even the wiggliest of the kids in the second-grade class participated and listened with rapt attention to their new music teacher. Walker’s talent and charisma were a gift. He made even the most basic lessons feel special and did a bang-up job of making Meghan feel special as well.

Often when they had corresponding free periods, he would come into her room to talk or sit at the chair on the other side of her desk while they both worked.

He seemed to value her opinion on every subject they discussed, and she couldn’t quite get used to someone of his fame and fortune being interested in what she had to say.

Who was she kidding? His fame has less to do with it than his inherent appeal and that sexy half smile he flashed like a badge. When their gazes met, she felt her stomach tie in knots, like she was a schoolgirl with a crush on the most popular boy in her grade.

Walker was also popular with the other staff members. He had a way of putting everyone at ease and didn’t seem to mind the barrage of questions from his new coworkers about topics ranging from what he ate on the road to sleeping on a tour bus to meeting Willie Nelson.

The curious moms made him less comfortable, but he handled them gracefully. Meghan had never seen so many parents request teacher conferences from a music teacher.

“Am I interrupting something?”

She felt her face flame as she turned to face Greg Wheeler and didn’t appreciate being caught daydreaming about Walker.

“Just making sure things are going okay next door. Walker was a little nervous about the lesson for today.”

Greg rolled his eyes. “Yes, I’m sure the famous country music star was just a barrel of nerves when thinking about talking to a roomful of elementary school kids. He can handle playing a sold-out stadium show, but ankle biters are a tough crowd.”

Greg made a show of inclining his head as if listening more intently to Walker’s lesson. “Is that ‘Here Comes the Sun’ by The Beatles?”

Meghan nodded.

“It’s an improvement from ‘Three Blind Mice’ on the recorder.”

“How can I help you?” Meghan asked, taking a step forward. She didn’t appreciate his condescension and felt strangely protective of Walker, the last man on earth who would need her in his corner.

“I suppose any performing, no matter how big or small, could be a struggle for Walker given his issues.”

That wasn’t an answer to Meghan’s question, and the insinuation irritated her.

“He isn’t struggling,” she countered. “The kids love him, and the other teachers and parents do, too.”

“Trust me, I’ve noticed,” Greg said, his voice tight. “Everybody loves Walker.”

Meghan didn’t like the sharp glint in Greg’s pale gaze as his eyes narrowed on the door between the classrooms.
