Chapter Fifteen
Donal, whoâd nipped into an illegal parking space as close to the guesthouse as he could get, insisted on carting the baby capsule into reception for Moira.
Kiera was once more sound asleep inside it with her head lolling to one side, a plump cheek resting on her shoulder. Her hat had slipped down over one eye too. Sheâd had a busy afternoon and it was no wonder she was tuckered out.
Moira placed the cottage pie Mammy had pressed into her hands despite her being in the bad books down on the pavement and got the door. She held it open so Donal could pass through before he, in turn, leaned against it so Moira could cart her load in.
The door shut behind them and Moira waved hello while Donal was all smiles as he greeted Aisling and Nina who were in deep conversation behind the front desk. They both looked up on hearing the door open, their faces broadening into smiles seeing Donal with Kiera.
Nina liked Donal; he reminded her of Santa Claus and she was always surprised when he spoke instead of simply, âHo, ho, hoing.â
âHowâre you, ladies?â he asked placing the sleeping baby carefully down on the carpeted floor next to her aunt. âDropping off a precious parcel, I am.â
Nina tucked the dark curls that had come loose from her hair bobble behind her ears and smiled down at the sleeping baby. She reminded her of Ana at the same age, sheâd the same soft pink flush to her cheeks too. Sheâd been unable to resist planting a kiss on those cheeks even at the risk of waking her. As much as sheâd like to cuddle little Kiera she wouldnât dare wake her though.
âGrand thanks, Donal,â Aisling replied for both of them, her gaze softening as she looked at her sleeping niece. Looking up once more she lowered her voice, âWell, I say grand. Weâre grand apart from the guest whoâs behaving like an arse despite being given the best room in the house.â She jabbed a finger upward and Donal stared at the ceiling as though expecting to see the spectre of the arsey guest.
âHeâs just given poor Nina here a hard time about the pipes making a noise. Weâre a quaint Georgian guest house, groaning pipes are par for the course. They add character for goodness sake.â
âAh,â Donal nodded, rubbing his beard and looking from the Spanish receptionist to his belovedâs middle daughter sympathetically. âSome people would complain about the noise when opportunity knocks so they would.â
Aisling agreed with him, staring hard at her mammyâs live-in man friend.
Nina played this saying over in her mind trying to make sense of it and when she finally did she decided it was a very wise thing to have said indeed. These Irish said some very odd things at times but sometimes they made perfect sense too.
âYouâre looking a tad pale on it there, Donal. Youâre not coming down with something are you?â Aisling asked.
âNo, no, Iâm as fit as a fiddle, Aisling.
