The Sudanese Army and Boko Haram in bed together. Right there before my eyes, but it was still difficult to believe. Sudan had been in and out of civil wars for years. The last thing that country needed was more upheaval. I could not conceive of a reason why Sudan would want to partner with Boko Haram. There was nothing Boko Haram had to offer a war-torn country other than more death, intimidation, and mayhem.

As I shifted away from the tub, I scanned the area for a possible escape route. If I could grab Moussa and get beyond the sea of tents, we might be able to lose any pursuers in the dense forest of the national park. But that would leave Uni still captive. I couldn’t leave Uni behind. No way. Somehow, I would have to breach the barrack where Uni had been taken by the man in the military hat, apparently a senior Boko Haram official. Hopefully, Uni and I could get our hands on some guns, and then the three of us would make a break for the woods.

Somehow.

A poor plan, really. Farfetched, if not ludicrous. There had to be at least 200 men in this camp.

The Colonel shouted at those of us doing laundry to remove bins from the Sudanese Army trucks. I got to my feet and followed the line of men.

The Colonel grabbed me by the arm. “I told you we had special plans for you. I do not forget.”

“Wash more clothes?”

He shook his head, failing to conceal a smile.

“You might as well tell me. I have nowhere to go. What kind of plans do you have for me?”

“You, my friend, will play a special role in our upcoming project. I assume you know how to drive. Well, you will drive a car full of explosives directly into an outdoor marketplace in a city in Cameroon. Do not worry, though. We will wait until you walk away from the vehicle before we detonate the bomb.”

I let this new intel comingle with the data I’d overheard during the Colonel’s conversation with Moussa, when he’d forced him to try on a suicide vest. The Boko Haram had enormous goals. And despite what the Colonel said, I had zero confidence they wanted to keep me or Moussa alive.

The Colonel shoved me toward the Sudanese trucks, where a handful of soldiers stood guard with automatic weapons at the ready.

“What did the Colonel tell you?” Moussa asked while a soldier struggled with a padlock at the back of the truck.

I gave him the five-second version.

“We have to fight back, Jack. Even if we die doing it. Are you with me?” He started to push past me, but I grabbed his shoulders and turned him toward the truck without much effort.

“Now is not the time, Moussa.”

“Are you afraid to put your life on the line for the good of all people? We must stand up to these fuckers.”

“Dude, you need to chill. If we want to stop these bombings, we have to keep our heads clear and our eyes open.
