Itook a few minutes to look through some of Craig’s documents to try and find this Mr. Bell, but as expected, I found nothing. I made a mental note to ask Craig to create a sort of town directory for me sometime, but knew that he would probably wonder if I was up to no good with it. Of course I would be, so that might not work. It would have been better for me to ask for something like that as soon as I’d moved into town.

There was one person, however, that I knew might be able to help me.

As soon as I got home, I dialed my friend and neighbor Vicky Foster.

“Well, hello there, stranger,” she said as soon as she picked up and heard my voice. “I was starting to think that you’d forgotten all about us over here across the street.”

“Of course not,” I said. “I’m sorry I haven’t called all week, things have just been a little…busy around here lately.”

“Oh, honey, don’t worry about it,” she said with a chuckle. “That brother of yours finally letting you officially in to help with his cases?”

“Not exactly, no…” I said.

She gasped. “Oh, do tell.”

I smiled. “This is exactly why I wanted to talk to you specifically. I knew you’d understand.”

“What can I help you with?”

“Well, I’m looking for someone,” I said. “But all I have is a last name.”

“Give it to me, I can almost guarantee that I’ll know them,” she said.

“I hoped you would say that,” I said. “The name’s Bell.”

“A man?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Well…I don’t know them personally, but my sister volunteers with a Mrs. Bell at the school once a week. They’re good friends!”

“Great!” I said. “Do you by any chance know where I might find them? Or have a telephone number?”

“Give me five minutes and I’ll call her to check.”

True to her word, she returned my call in the next few minutes with an address and even times when the family would be home for the day. Her sister was all too happy to share the information, which did make me feel a little guilty.

I shared this with Vicky.

“Oh, don’t feel bad,” she said. “You’re doing this to help. Now, I will say that my sister is quite fond of Mrs. Bell and her family. She says they’re wonderful people. Not to poison the well, so to speak, but you might find no fault in them.”

“I’ll do my best to be impartial,” I said. “Though I will tell you that I was not all that impressed with Mrs. Harper when I went to speak with her about her husband.”

“You have a good read on people,” Vicky said. “I’d trust that instinct, if I were you. You haven’t been wrong yet.”

“I’ve been wrong a few times,” I said.

“Not in the end, you haven’t been,” she said.

“Yes, but sometimes that ended with me backed into a corner.”

“Maybe…but all I can see is the way that you dragged me away from that shed burning in my backyard, knowing full well that you did it to help me.
