Water may be a dieter’s best friend—and tea is not excluded. Here’s proof: Health professor Ruopeng An of the University of Illinois and researchers have pinpointed by increasing your water intake by one to three cups per day you may eat 68 to 2,015 fewer calories on a daily regimen. The eye-opening study published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics included more than 18,000 people who not only experienced a decrease in calories, but ate less fat, sugar, and sodium and cholesterol foods. The result? Fewer calories, more weight loss.

What’s more, good news for tea lovers (especially if drinking water isn’t your cup of tea) because beverages such as unsweetened black tea and herbal tea were not included as sources of plain water, but their water content was included in the calculations of the individuals’ water intake. It was noted that decreases were more among men and among young and middle-aged adults, who may be likely to eat more calories per day.1
