She took another bite of her apple, obviously considering the situation as she chewed. “The ball game tonight,” she said. “You can come with me and tell me things about all my friends. Hey! Tell me if Brianne really likes Ted Nelson, because she says she doesn’t, but I sense a real strong chemistry there—”

“I don’t have much choice in what I hear. I can’t just zoom into people’s thoughts. And I don’t know if I really want to be seen with my sister at the ball game tonight. What will people think?”

“I promise I won’t show them pictures of you as a naked baby, okay? I just want to see how this works.”

“Trust me, Heather. It works.”

“Well, why you? Why not somebody more . . .”

“Equipped?” he asked.

“Yeah, that’s the word.”

“That’s the question I’ve been asking all day. But he did choose me, and I’m starting to be excited about it.” He swallowed hard. “Imagine what he has planned for my life, to give me a gift like this.”

“But you don’t even know that much Scripture. You’re, like, the worst person I could think of.”

“Thanks, Sis, I can always count on you to be honest with me. Not to mention encouraging.”

“I’m not trying to hurt your feelings, Jake. I just don’t get it.”

“I don’t know, maybe God was trying to light a fire under me,” he said. “But whatever the case, he’s taught me today that all I really need to know is what Jesus did for me and what he can do for others.”

Heather’s eyes twinkled with amusement as she stared at her brother. “I never thought I’d hear you talk like this,” she said. “That, in itself, is a miracle.”

He shook his head and grinned. “Heather, you ain’t seen nothing yet.”
