Chapter 13
Phoenix
Elisha changed her mind and said she didnât want to go in the plunge pool. She had an English Lit essay to complete and she had hardly written a page. Iâd been looking forward to itâand not just from a recovery point of viewâso it was disappointing to be turned down. And I didnât want to go in by myself in case I slipped or fell.
I thought things had gone well between us, you know, giving her my hoodie to wear and holding hands and then the hug in the kitchen. I mean, it had been totally unexpected, and I wasnât declaring my undying love to her or anything, but it had been nice to connect. But apparently none of it meant anything to the ice queen, and now I was regretting spilling my heart to her, because sheâd gone up to her room like she was running for the hills. Well, earlier than thatâsheâd ditched me when our food came, eating on her own in the kitchen. Probably couldnât get away fast enough from the teary-eyed wimp with a limp.
When the tennis finished, I watched the earlier games that Iâd missed. Tennis kept me focused. It meant I didnât have to think about Elisha, and by the time another three sets had passed, Iâd convinced myself I could probably go through the next two days without seeing her at all if I timed things right.
I considered staying up and waiting for Mom. Now that Iâd told Elisha about the lawsuit, maybe I needed to tell Mom before Dad sprung it on her. But Mom had been happy for the past few days and I didnât want to be the one to sink her ship. Dad could be the bad guy, not me.
Hey, wimp with a limp, remember?
A knock on the door made me jump, and I rolled over in bed to see Mom tiptoeing into the room using the torch on her phone.
âHey, Phoe, just wanted to know if everything went okay.â
âYeah,â I said, not sure what she mean by âeverything.â
âYou ordered food for Elisha?â
âYes,â I said, adding a dry, âAnd me.â
âThank you,â she said with a laugh. âJust wanted to make sure weâre treating our guest right.â
âHow was your night?â
Mom shrugged. âOkay. Yes, it was fine. Right, Iâll see you in the morning.â She straightened my bed cover and leaned to kiss the top of my head.
âTaylorâs coming over tomorrow morning,â I said.
âOh good,â Mom said. âWhat time? Maybe she can stay for lunch?â
âEarly. But probably not, sheâs got matches at the Club.â
âOkay. Goodnight, Phoe.â
âGânight.â
Max had gone away for Thanksgiving weekend, visiting his Dadâs family who were having a reunion. He wasnât due back until Sunday, which is why Taylor was coming over. Iâd help her with more sprint training and sheâd hit with me.
âHey, no crutches?â That was the first thing Taylor said when she greeted me with a high five.
âHowâs Max?â I asked.
âSick of turkey leftovers and pumpkin pie,â Taylor quipped.
I laughed, but didnât waste time in taking Taylor out to the court.
