Imagine That!
Imagineer Ron Rodriguez remembers the challenges of booking the original entertainment for the Italy pavilion: “Sonny Anderson, then the Director of Casting and Booking in California, was traveling in Italy and sent me some entertainers to rehearse for the Alfredo restaurant in the Italy pavilion in Epcot. None of them spoke English. They were opera singers, and while there were some tough times communicating, they finally got it and turned it into a great show.”
Turn around and walk to the right side of the pavilion, where you’ll find a door with columns on either side. What is the meaning of this passageway to nowhere? The columns represent the classical orders, three distinct styles that show the progression of column architecture over the years. Starting with the earliest style at the bottom of the left-hand column, they run from Doric used by the Greeks and Romans, to Ionic, which became popular in 570 B.C.E., to Corinthian, which appeared in 450 B.C.E. All are styles still used today, though Corinthian’s ornate style remains the most popular.
Pop into Via Napoli for a quick look at their wood-burning pizza ovens, or better yet, have a meal there. The faces that frame the ovens are the mythological goddess Etna, who lends her name to an active volcano in Sicily; volcano Vesuvius in Naples, which honors the demigod Hercules; and Stromboli, volcanic home to Aeolus, keeper of the wind. Notice, however, that all three faces are male, but Etna is, in mythology, a female. Why does she have the characteristics of a male? Because the images were taken from ancient tile work in Rome.
