The Technion Institute, Haifa
Nighttime. The parking lot in front of the laboratory building at the Technion Institute is faintly illuminated by two lights standing posted in two of its corners. The burnt-out bulbs in the other two have not yet been replaced. Itâs eleven oâclock at night. Thereâs only one car parked there, caught in the headlights of another car that is slowly gliding into the parking lot. The approaching car comes to a stop. Its headlights shut off. The door opens and a tall man with a thick red beard hanging over the upright collar of his long coat steps out of the car.
The man stands for a moment and looks at the front of the building. All the floors are dark, except for a few windows on the fourth floor from which a faint yellowish light emanates. The man approaches the front door. It is locked. He returns to his car and takes a long crowbar out of the trunk. He uses it to force open the door and goes into the building. He shines a flashlight on the sign behind the darkened reception desk. The beam of the flashlight focuses on a row of silver aluminum letters: â Genetics Laboratory â Fourth Floor.â The man uses his flashlight to light his way and climbs up the staircase to the fourth floor.
In the genetics laboratory, Dr. Salim Jubran is busy performing various tests. A particularly urgent and intriguing matter has made the doctor stay in the laboratory this late by himself. The Doctor is tearing off data printouts coming from the computer. He inspects them while rubbing his eyes in bewilderment, muttering to himself: âUnbelievable... absolutely incredible...â
Red Beard arrives at the door of the laboratory. He lightly presses down on the handle. The door opens. He leans the crowbar against the wall by the door and enters. The surprised Dr. Jubran lifts his eyes from the paper printout in his hands with great astonishment.
Dr. Jubran: âWho are you? How did you get in here? What are you doing here?â
Red Beard: âWhere is the Grail?â
Dr. Jubran: âThereâs no Grail here. Please leave right now!â
The bearded man ignores Dr. Jubranâs demands and starts snooping around. He abruptly opens drawers and cupboards, knocking over glassware that shatters on the floor.
Dr. Jubran: âI told you there is no Grail here. Please leave at once or I will have to call security.â
Red Beard, places a large hand on Dr. Jubranâs shoulder and looks deep into his eyes. âI will ask you for the second and last time. Where is the Grail?â
Dr. Jubran: âI gave it back. The Armenian antique dealer was here this afternoon and took it.â
The bearded man gives Dr. Jubran another piercing look before he takes his hand off of his shoulder, turns around, and leaves. He picks up the crowbar leaning by the door and stuffs it through the handles blocking the door from being opened from the inside. He then goes down the stairs and walks to his car.
