When the Seaman’s Bethel was relocated in 1914 and renamed Turner Hall, a gymnasium was added to its facilities. Here, girls who are a part of the settlement program sit on the parallel bars and pommel horse. There are mats on the floor in the background, and the girl at far left holds a medicine ball. A resident worker ran the gymnasium and gave classes in gymnastics and physical fitness.

This sewing class is taking place on the first floor of the Hooper-Hathaway House. Settlement instructors assist the girls with their work. A wire screen divides the room, and coat racks are hung with the children’s coats and hats. A large poster of native birds hangs at left, and at right, a series of toys can be seen on the shelves.
