When Ronnie Hawkins got the $5,000 phone bill for the week that John and Yoko had been his guests, he noticed among the many unfamiliar places on the chits the name of Alborg, a little town in Jutland, on the bleak northern tip of Denmark. This is where Tony Cox was living with his new wife, Melinde Kendall, the blond, bespectacled daughter of a prosperous family in Houston. Tony had met Melinde after returning to London from his post-marital cruise in the spring of 1969. They had been married the following summer at Bellport, Long Island, in a formal church ceremony, in the presence of both the bride's and groom's families, with Kyoko serving as flower girl. That fall the Coxes had left for Denmark, at the invitation of an old friend of Tony and Yoko's, Aage Rosendal Nielsen, who got the newlyweds a teaching job at a little experimental school, Norden Fjord World University.

There had been bad blood between Cox and the Lennons ever since the auto crash in Scotland because John and Yoko had refused to send Tony the medical reports and X rays of Kyoko. Now the Lennons offered to smooth things over by coming to Denmark to pay Kyoko a visit and to discuss her custody. It was two days after Christmas when John and Yoko stepped off the little plane from Copenhagen - and found themselves in a setting for a horror movie.

Tony and Melinde were living in a remote farmhouse surrounded by miles of empty fields buried under deep snowdrifts and raked by Arctic winds off the North Sea. The Lennons, fresh from the comforts of England, suddenly found themselves completely cut off from the outer world, without so much as a telephone. Nor did they find Kyoko running out to greet them. Tony had sequestered the child until he could hammer out the terms of the visitation.

The moment John and Yoko stepped through the door, Cox must have gone to work on them. Indeed, in the light of his subsequent statements and those made by John Lennon, it's easy to imagine his rap. He would have explained that since he had last seen the Lennons, he had gotten into some very heavy stuff that could make an enormous difference in their lives. Melinde had been a member of a psychic cult located at Harbinger Springs near San Francisco, whose leader. Dr. Don Hamrick, was a brilliant man who had written some amazing books. He was a key figure in the effort to promote contact between humankind and extra-terrestrials. Hamrick had already made contact with space people in Norway. He could put John and Yoko in touch with the ETs, too. (What Tony wouldn't have said, at least at first, was that Hamrick believed the best way to promote communication between spacemen and earthmen was through the Beatles. He reasoned, sensibly, that nobody on the planet had the hold on people's minds possessed by the Fab Four, who had functioned .time and again to introduce new modes of consciousness, like LSD and TM.
