Bradley pointed to a framed diagram of the solar system on the wall to his right.

“So what do we do?” he asked. “Mars and Earth won’t be this close again for another two years. And our ship is waiting in orbit. The materials to build the lab and the ascent vehicle are already on Mars. They could become damaged if we wait two more years.”

He paused and stared at me. I must have looked pretty dopey because I was still trying to process everything. He was saying the mission might be cancelled because they didn’t have three astronauts. But they did. They had me.
