They felt honored to have the councilman’s daughter coming to their humble house for dinner. But they didn’t know much about the young man with the snake tattooed on the back of his hand. He was handsome enough, to be sure. But he certainly wasn’t the kind of a boy they’d have liked their daughter to be dating.

“So, how does your father like being on the city council so far?” Matt Villa asked Carmen.

“He still sorta can’t believe it,” Carmen answered. “He’s set up his first project already. They had a weekend fair for homeless veterans. They’re trying to get medical and dental care and jobs, if they’re well enough to work. And they also had a clearinghouse for cheaper housing. Alot of guys are really hurting, and an outreach like that’s a big help. It’s easy for the older veterans to just give up and think that nobody cares.”
